Google Business Profile Categories for Tile Installers

More Tile Jobs · Oct 20, 2026 · 3 min read

Your primary Google Business Profile category should describe the main business you actually operate. For an installation company, that means representing installation work rather than presenting yourself as a tile store simply because the word tile appears in both.

Google's available categories can change and may vary by location and language. Check the choices in your own profile instead of copying a fixed list from another business.

Start with the main business

Write one plain sentence explaining what customers hire your company to do. If your core work is installing tile, look for a specific tile installation category, such as “Tile contractor,” if that option appears in your profile and matches the business.

Do not choose a broader remodeling category merely to cover more searches when you do not perform the broader work. A shower installation does not automatically make your business a general contractor, plumber, or full bathroom remodeler.

Google's category guidance says to choose a specific available category that describes the business. If the exact option is unavailable, select an appropriate broader category. You cannot invent your own.

Add categories only for genuine business activities

Additional categories should describe other real parts of the business, not every service phrase you want to rank for. A company that installs tile but does not sell materials should not add a retail category just to reach more searches.

Check that each selection is supported by the work, website, and customer experience. A category can also affect profile features, so review what changes rather than assuming all businesses see the same controls.

Follow Google's business representation guidelines. The aim is accurate representation, not the largest possible category list.

Keep categories separate from services

Categories identify the type of business. Service descriptions explain the actual installations you offer. These are related but different fields.

Use services and website pages to explain showers, floors, backsplashes, repairs, or other genuine work. Describe the scope clearly enough that a homeowner understands what is and is not included.

Our Google profile service page covers the wider review. A correct category cannot make up for the wrong phone number, an unclear website, or inaccurate coverage.

Record the current setup before editing

Confirm that you have appropriate access and preserve a dated record of the existing primary and additional categories. Note why a change is being made.

Google warns that category changes may require verification again. Make sure the business owner can respond through the proper account and that the underlying business information is accurate.

Avoid changing categories repeatedly in response to daily position changes. Record the change and review comparable information, including the kinds of inquiries the business receives.

Do not copy a competitor's mistakes

A competitor's public category does not establish that it is right for your company. They may operate a showroom, provide different services, or have inaccurate information.

Use competitors as a prompt to check your own facts, not permission to add services you cannot deliver. The guide to why another tile company appears first explains other factors that affect visibility.

If the profile is missing altogether, use the missing Google Maps profile checklist before treating the category as the only possible problem.

Categories do not create a new service area

An installation business run from home still needs the correct address and service area treatment. Categories are not a workaround for location rules.

Read whether to display a home address if customers do not visit your premises. Do not create duplicate profiles for every city you travel to.

Accurate business facts also support customers who encounter your company through AI search. They do not guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation or any particular Google position.

Questions about category choices

Should every installer use exactly the same primary category?

No. Start with the main activity of the actual business and the options available in that account. Installation, retail, and broader remodeling businesses may need different choices.

Should I put the category in my business name?

Use the genuine business name. Do not add service or city keywords that are not part of the business's real name.

Can you review the whole profile?

Yes. Request an audit to review the profile alongside your website and service coverage. A category review is not a ranking guarantee.
