Why Your Competitor Shows Up First on Google Maps

More Tile Jobs · Oct 20, 2026 · 5 min read

Your tile competitor can appear above you on Google Maps because of how well their business matches the search, how close it is to the searcher, and how prominent Google considers it. A different search or location can produce a different order.

Google describes these main local ranking factors as relevance, distance, and prominence. There is no single public score that explains every result, and a screenshot of one search does not prove that a competitor ranks first everywhere.

Before replacing your website or buying a ranking promise, work through the checks below.

Separate the kind of result you are looking at

A sponsored placement is not the same as an unpaid Maps result. A business website in the main search results is also a different surface from its Business Profile.

Record which result you are comparing, the exact query, the date, and the approximate search location. “We do not rank” is too broad to diagnose.

For a tile installation business, compare searches that match the work you actually want: shower tile installation, tile floor installation, or tile repair, for example. A broad search for tile can mix installers with stores and other businesses.

Use only services you perform. Your goal is not to appear for every phrase containing the word tile.

Check relevance before counting reviews

Open your own Business Profile as a potential customer would. Can you quickly tell that this is an installation company and understand its services?

Review:

  1. The real business name, without added search keywords.
  2. The primary category and any additional categories that accurately describe the business.
  3. Services, contact information, hours, and website link.
  4. Recent photos of real work.
  5. Whether the linked website clearly explains the same installation services.

Google recommends complete, detailed, and accurate information. That does not mean selecting unrelated categories or filling every field with repeated city names.

If your profile is unverified, suspended, or attached to the wrong business, address that specific problem through the proper process. Creating a duplicate profile can make the situation harder to resolve.

Understand what distance can and cannot be changed

A competitor may be closer to the homeowner searching. Google says distance is one of the main local ranking factors, including when it estimates a searcher's location.

Adding a long list of service areas does not move your business closer to every homeowner. Neither does creating a page for a city where you do not genuinely provide service.

Do not open fake offices or use another company's address to chase a result. Represent your business honestly and follow the rules for your business type.

When reviewing visibility, use more than the search you make from your own office or home. Compare a consistent set of relevant locations over time. Any location sampling or rank tracking tool should be treated as a measurement aid, not a perfect recreation of every homeowner's results.

Look at prominence without treating it as a review contest

Google says prominence includes information such as websites linking to a business and its reviews. A competitor with a stronger established presence may have an advantage, but review count alone does not explain the entire result.

Ask whether your business has a consistent, legitimate presence: useful website pages, accurate listings, genuine customer feedback, and real relationships that can lead people to mention or link to it.

Avoid buying reviews or links sold solely to manipulate rankings. Do not assume that copying a competitor's suspicious tactic is safe just because the competitor appears above you today.

Make sure the website supports the business profile

A homepage with a logo and a phone number leaves many questions unanswered. Your website should explain the work, service area, and next step in language a homeowner can understand.

Check whether your important service pages are accessible, accurate, and linked from the site. Add real project examples where you have permission, and make the phone number and estimate request easy to find on mobile.

Service and city pages should be useful individually. Duplicating the same page under different place names is not a substitute for local relevance or real service coverage.

Our search visibility service for tile contractors explains how we connect profile work, pages, reviews, listings, and tracking.

Keep a simple visibility record

For each check, record the search phrase, approximate location, date, result type, and the page or profile that appeared. Note substantial changes you made so you can compare like with like later.

With permission to access the business accounts, review Business Profile performance and website search data as separate sources. Impressions, profile interactions, and website clicks are not all the same thing, and a call click does not prove that a completed conversation or booked job occurred.

Track actual inquiries through estimates and booked work. If visibility improves but the phone is not answered, you have a different problem from a business that is not being found.

Prioritize fixes instead of changing everything at once

Start with factual errors and access problems. Then improve the clarity of your services, the usefulness of your pages, and the consistency of your review and inquiry processes.

Do not buy a new package based only on a provider showing you one unfavorable screenshot. Ask which issue they found, what they will change, how it complies with Google's rules, and what they will measure.

Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. That does not mean marketing work has no value. It means a provider should describe its work and evidence honestly rather than claiming control over Google's results.
